Identity isn’t fixed in adolescence. For many people — especially high-achieving professionals in their 30s and 40s — the self built during the climb no longer fits the person doing the living. Identity reconsolidation is the process of examining which parts of your life are genuinely yours — chosen, authentic, aligned — and which were inherited, expected, or adopted without question.

What is identity reconsolidation therapy?

Identity reconsolidation therapy is psychodynamic work that helps adults — particularly those navigating midlife transitions — examine and rebuild their sense of self. Rather than managing symptoms, it explores the root: the patterns, relationships, and scripts that have shaped who you’ve become, and what you want to carry forward.

How is this different from general therapy?

Psychodynamic therapy addresses why — the underlying patterns that generate those thoughts and feelings. Identity reconsolidation work is specifically focused on the self: who you are, how that self was formed, and how it can be rebuilt more intentionally.

How long does this work take?

This is long-term work, typically a year or more for meaningful change. Sessions can be weekly or bi-weekly, which helps maintain momentum and support progress. The depth of what we’re addressing doesn’t resolve in 8-12 sessions. Research has shown psychodynamic therapy clients continue to improve after treatment ends.
